For building the graphite branch right now, here are the steps you'll have to go through: You have to get a copy of the release 0.9 of PPL from: http://www.cs.unipr.it/ppl/Download/ cd ppl ./configure --prefix=/somewhere make make install Then you can get a copy of the port of Cloog to PPL as follows: cd cloog git-init git-pull http://repo.or.cz/w/cloog-ppl.git aclocal autoconf ./configure --with-ppl=/somewhere --prefix=/somewhere make make install Then grab a version of graphite branch and configure like this: cd gcc/build ../configure --with-cloog=/somewhere --with-ppl=/somewhere make For the moment I think that building the cloog and ppl libs in the gcc directory is broken. I have not been able to configure ppl within the build of gcc because ieeefp.h has not been found on my ubuntu system. I will try to see how that can be fixed, or better, not provide this functionality and expect all the time the cloog and ppl libs to be installed on the system. Note that ppl and polylib are two backends of cloog, and one has the choice of the polyhedral library to be used. For the moment the code generated by the ppl backend contains much more conditions that are redundant with respect to the enclosing loops because of the cloog_domain_simplify operation that is still very inefficient in the ppl backend. This should be improved either in newer versions of PPL. Hi, Just a follow-up to this message that I sent to the GCC mailing list. This was more an executive level summary of the changes, so I'm going to give you some more details on the low level changes and the missing parts from PPL that I had to adapt for replacing PolyLib. Hopefully this code can be included in the PPL, or you already have support for it that I missed when I coded. The plan is to clean up CLooG's PPL back-end, by pushing as much of the missing functionality in PPL. The main missing part in PPL is the union of convex polyhedra and the operations on them. For example, have a look at the first polyhedral operation that I ported, cloog_domain_intersection in this commit: http://repo.or.cz/w/cloog-ppl.git?a=commitdiff;h=d78c8bb5f121aaaa78f69b643c2... at the end of this commit, there is code that implements around the ppl_Polyhedron_intersection_assign the missing parts to work on unions of convex polyhedra. IMHO these are good candidates to extend the available functionality of PPL. "For matching the PolyLib implementation the code to detect redundant constraints should be more accurate. One solution could be to use the GLPK solver that can be bound in with PPL to minimize the constraint systems." Let me explain a little bit more what I was meaning by:

A huge amount of code in PolyLib deals with the simplification of redundant constraint that are then removed from the polyhedra. I was thinking that this could be done by formulating the problem as ILP and then solve it using a generic ILP solver like the GLPK, but I didn't thought long enough to see how this can be implemented. The quality of the code generated by cloog heavily depends on an efficient implementation of this function. Hi, CLooG and Graphite are now expecting PPL 0.10 to be installed. You will have to git-pull again the code for CLooG and install a new PPL version. Without that, the current head of the graphite branch won't compile anymore. Instructions on how to build the branch are on http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/Graphite I recommend that you use the latest snapshots of PPL, right now ftp://ftp.cs.unipr.it/pub/ppl/snapshots/ppl-0.10pre22.tar.bz2 as I will clean up the code of the CLooG-PPL backend and it will rely on new functionality that is present only on beta22. Sebastian, Do you have a patch for allowing graphite to build against polylib as well as ppl yet? The current graphite branch patches and ppl 1.0pre22 still appears unable to do any actual loop optimizations so I would like to be able to go back to using polylib for some polyhedron 2005 benchmarks of the new loop optimizations. pre23 contains more functions for domain_simplify, but these are not yet used in cloog.git. I will send a note when CLooG is using these and when you'll have to update cloog and ppl. For the moment either pre22 or pre23 should just work. Sebastian

Hi Sebastian, I am not sure I understand. PPL 0.10 has makes available the Pointset_Powerset abstract domain from within all the foreign interfaces (including of course the C one). This domain used not to be in the list of instantiations provided by default; the user has to request it at configure-time by using the --enable-instantiations option. To simplify things for you, I have just added the domains Pointset_Powerset<C_Polyhedron> and Pointset_Powerset<NNC_Polyhedron> to the set of instantiations that are generated by default. It's hard to define formally, but generally speaking, I would say the shortest the constraint list the better, and the simplest the expressions the better (involving less variables). There is probably not a unique optimal solution, but the intuition is that code has to be generated from these contraints (loop bounds or conditionals), and more constraints or more terms means more costly control flow and boolean expressions. Hi Sebastian, I am not sure I understand. PPL 0.10 has makes available the Pointset_Powerset abstract domain from within all the foreign interfaces (including of course the C one). This domain used not to be in the list of instantiations provided by default; the user has to request it at configure-time by using the --enable-instantiations option. To simplify things for you, I have just added the domains Pointset_Powerset<C_Polyhedron> and Pointset_Powerset<NNC_Polyhedron> to the set of instantiations that are generated by default. Another issue is: do you really need NNC polyhedra? I am asking because I guess you only work with integer variables: in this case, C polyhedra should suffice. Moreover, there is a performance penalty to be paid for NNC polyhedra (think about a factor 2, both in space and time, for typical computations). Yes, thanks, this was useful to help me understand the implementation. This functionality is indeed ad-hoc for your purposes: it assumes some very specific meaning for the space dimensions, hence it is difficult to provide it with a *clean* specification. I doubt its inclusion in the PPL would be a good thing. On the other hand, having worked on it, I can fairly say that such an inclusion in the PPL would not buy much in terms of efficiency: all the potential efficiency improvements that I spot when looking at your code are indeed available through the current PPL public interface. See the attached file: it is C++ (due to my own taste), but it shouldn't be difficult to convert it so as to use the C interface of the library. The main improvements wrt your version are the following: (1) Before computing the intersection polyhedron q, you first throw away all constraints on the non-parameter variables having index >= level-1. This can be coded (in a simpler way) using C function int ppl_Polyhedron_unconstrain_space_dimensions (ppl_Polyhedron_t ph, ppl_dimension_type ds[], size_t n); where ds is the array of space dimension indices, of length n, encoding the set of vars to be unconstrained (this function is new to PPL 0.10). (2) When the code tests for conditions for returning -1, you have two nested loops iterating on the constraints of q1 and q2 (named q_x and q_y in my C++ code). Here, we have two kinds of improvements: (2a) use iterating functions on PPL constraint systems instead of converting back and forth between PPL and cloog matrix representations. (2b) MORE IMPORTANTLY, the test for non-empty intersection in the inner loop can be coded more efficiently using the "relation_with" functionality of the PPL, i.e., the C function int ppl_Polyhedron_relation_with_Constraint (ppl_const_Polyhedron_t ph, ppl_const_Constraint_t c); and testing whether the result *entails* the value PPL_POLY_CON_RELATION_IS_DISJOINT (i.e., testing if this bit is set in the returned value). This should be a big win, as it avoids the creation/disposal of a quadratic number of polyhedra. Hope the explanation above, together with the attached C++ code, is helpful enough. The easier way would be to write a C stub calling the attached C++ code ... provided you allow for compiling some C++ in cloog. Ciao, Enea.

I'm looking at the simplification algorithm from a program transform standpoint. The above problem is then formulated as, given a loop nest iterating over D: for (x = 10; x <= 40; x++) for (y = 10; y <= 40; y++) stmt0 (x, y); and knowing that "stmt0 (x, y)" is a nop for all the points in the context C, i.e. for example "stmt0 (x, y)" could be: if (!C) stmt1 (x, y); The domain simplification would try to remove the condition "if (!C)", and this can potentially split the convex polyhedron D into a union of convex polyhedra: in this case it would be the cross remaining after removing the corners of D. The separate convex domains of the result are then scanned one by one: distinct loop nests are generated for each convex component of the union.
If we encode the two unions above in PPL and run the simplify_using_context() on our Pointset_Powerset domain, we will obtain no simplification at all, i.e., the result is indeed the singleton input square. This makes sense, as far as I can see, since no constraint in the input polyhedron is redundant for all the disjuncts of the context.

you would have to write a program using cloog_domain_union_read and then pass on stdin the matrix representation of domains: for example D = [ { 10 <= x <= 40, 10 <= y <= 40 } ] should be encoded like this: 4 4 1 1 0 -10 1 -1 0 40 1 0 1 -10 1 0 -1 40 then call cloog_domain_simplify on the domains, or DomainSimplify on the PolyLib polyhedra. Sebastian, if you are interested, I have ready (see attached file) a replacement of function cloog_simplify_domain that uses the PPL implementation: it translates the two cloog input domains into PPL powersets, do the job, and translates back the result into a cloog domain. Note that in order to use this function you will have to wait for the next PPL snapshot (the last snapshot does not include a few fixes regarding the C interface for powersets). If really impatient, you can try it with the CVS version. Enea.

if you are interested, I have ready (see attached file) a replacement of function cloog_simplify_domain that uses the PPL implementation: it translates the two cloog input domains into PPL powersets, do the job, and translates back the result into a cloog domain.
Note that in order to use this function you will have to wait for the next PPL snapshot (the last snapshot does not include a few fixes regarding the C interface for powersets).
