Hi there, I believe the following behavior of the CVS version of YAP witnesses a bug (or, quite possible, a misunderstanding on my part): $ yap [ Restoring file /usr/local/lib/Yap/startup ] [ YAP version Yap-4.3.23 ] ?- current_prolog_flag(bounded,X). X = false ? ?- X is 333333333333333, integer(X). no ?- X is 33333333, integer(X). X = 33333333 ? ?- X is 333333333333333, float(X). no ?- X is 333333333333333, number_chars(X,L). X = 333333333333333, L = [51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51,51] ? In words, the Prolog engine first declares it is employing unbounded integers, then it silently converts an integer numeral to... to what? Is this a bug? Am I missing something? I have just downloaded gettext-0.12.1 and looking at AC_LIB_LINKFLAGS(gmpxx, gmp). I must say I was aware of the problem but could not find a portable solution (I know too little about shared libraries and libtool and so on and never find the time to fill this gap). I agree the problem is very annoying: for example, if you happen to have one libgmp installed into a standard location, but you want to experiment with another version of libgmp, our --with-gmp-* options are of little help. Would you be so kind to tell us more about the solution you suggest? Is adding AC_LIB_LINKFLAGS(gmpxx, gmp) to configure.ac really all what needs to be done? Shouldn't ac_check_gmp.m4 also be modified so that the directory specified with the option --with-gmp-dir can be taken into account? I also guess the position into configure.ac must be chosen carefully. The announcements of the first two seminars in the series follow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tuesday, November 18th, 2003 Time: 14:30 Speaker: Fabio Torrisi ETH Zurich Title: Convexity Recognition of the Union of Polyhedra Abstract: In this talk, we consider the following basic problem in polyhedral computation: Given two polyhedra in finite dimension, P and Q, decide whether their union is convex, and, if so, compute it. We consider the three natural specializations of the problem: (1) when the polyhedra are given by halfspaces (H-polyhedra), (2) when they are given by vertices and extreme rays (V-polyhedra), and (3) when both H- and V-polyhedral representations are available. Both the bounded (polytopes) and the unbounded case are considered. We show that the first two problems are polynomially solvable, and that the third problem is strongly-polynomially solvable. More exactly, given a polytope P by a system of linear inequalities, we look for two collections I and E of boxes with non-overlapping interiors such that the union of all boxes in I is contained in P and the union of all boxes in E contains P. We propose and test several techniques to construct I and E aimed at getting a good balance between two contrasting objectives: minimize the volume error and minimize the total number of generated boxes. We suggest how to modify the proposed techniques in order to approximate the projection of P onto a given subspace without computing the projection explicitly.
