Point 8 of Section 7.1.5.1 [The cv qualifiers] of the C++98 standard says that "In general, the semantics of volatile are intended to be the same in C++ as they are in C." Since functions can only return rvalues, and since C++98 and C99 are (believed to be) converging, the type qualifier "volatile" on return type has been removed. FIXME resolved.
