Dear Axel,
since I suspect you do not subscribe the PPL-devel mailing list, I am forwarding the answer Enea sent this morning. I may perhaps add that we plan to release PPL 0.5 in a couple of weeks. You can find a draft list of new features and changes at
http://www.cs.unipr.it/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/ppl/NEWS?rev=HEAD
All the best
Roberto

My machine uses FreeBSD 4.6 and gcc 2.95.3. Is the compiler too old?
You are right, we do not support compiling the PPL with this version of the compiler, since we use features of the language which were not available at that time. Things should work properly starting from GCC 3.0 onwards. You can also have a look at the PPL requirements page:

Do not hesitate to contact us again if you find any other problem.
Cheers, Enea Zaffanella.
